Gyorgy Ligeti, among other composers, unwittingly contributed to the development of the spectral movement. His interwoven sounds, micropolyphonies and transformative processes have profoundly influenced the Itinéraire generation. While composers like Tristan Murail and his former student Michel Galante analyse sound with computers and base their compositions on sound models, Ligeti was more interested in rhythmical and macrophonic writing, which have little to do with the preoccupations of spectral composers. Philippe Hurel, though he keeps in mind the harmonic principles inherited from the spectral, emancipates himself from the spectral movement through concentrating on energy, rhythm, motives and instrumental gesture. The younger generation, represented here by one of Claire-Mélanie Sinnhuber's pieces, bases its works more on sound than on pitch. Their music is part of a new stage in a movement that has opened many doors.
