The dream of a totally coherent work in which even the smallest element is linked to the greater structure - the Structuralist dream, in short - has inspired composers for many years. To quote Piaget, "the same elements appear in every sort of structuralism: an ideal or hope of intrinsic intelligibility based on the postulate that a structure is self-sufficient and does not require recourse to anything foreign to its nature in order to be understood.
The ideal of intrinsic intelligibility informs the works of Hans-Peter Kiburz, who creates his working material from fractals and algorithms, which allow him to direct macro- and micro-structures; of Philippe Hurel, who uses patterns and irregular canons with fractal properties in building his polyphonic structures; of Philippe Manoury, whose works incorporate serialism and Markov chains; and of Luca Francesconi, who expands sound material through the use of rules.
Rather than reading an obsession with control into these practices and the calculations they imply, one can discern a search for a World Order on the part of composers who proceed more as artisans guided by a higher order than as Demiurges.
